María Luisa Mendoza Vázquez, El Grijalba, Venustiano Carranza, Chiapas - cotton brocade weaving María Luisa Mendoza Vázquez, El Grijalba, Venustiano Carranza, Chiapas - cotton brocade weaving María Luisa and her group of women, live in the small town of Paraiso de Grivalba near the dam of La Angostura in central Chiapas. It is in the municipality of Venustiano Carranza that is famous for its beautiful brocaded textiles.

Some women can still be seen wearing the tradition short skirt and the light brocaded huipil of the area when others keep their traditional clothes for the fiestas. The climate in that area is hot and humid and the cotton weaving is lighter than that of the highlands, but the brocade still shows the Maya symbols of the area and many people can be heard speaking Tzotzil.

Several types of threads are being used, and the thickness of the fabric varies. The finest weaving is known as petet and is semi- transparent. It is a type of brocaded gauze. The men’s wedding shirts are made of petet and it can take up to a year to complete a shirt. They also wear white pantalon with small red Maya symbols that are wonderful.

María Luisa and her sister María Ines  won prizes in March 2015 at the Foro Naciónal de Grandes Maestros y Maestras del Arte Popular: one for a petet rebozo  made of cotton thread  and a second award for a piece of cloth made of cotton thread as well. Both naturally were made on a back-strap loom. María Luisa also received the Galardón (overalll best) award at the2015 Concurso Naciónal de Textiles for her rebozo de petet.
